Hong Kong Police Force Launches CyberDefender Metaverse Platform

The Hong Kong Police Force has launched its new metaverse platform which is called CyberDefender, that aims educating the public about the potential risks associated with Web3 and the metaverse  . During the launch event which was called “Exploring the Metaverse” CSTCB chief inspector Ip Cheuk-yu stressed that the metaverse is no safer than the internet and warned that all types of cyber-crimes can happen within this digital realm  .

Enhancing Security Measures for Web3 and Metaverse

Chief investigator Ip Cheuk-yu highlighted the potential risks that could be caused by decentralization, some of which include increased vulnerability to asset theft and attacks on metaverse systems  .To address these concerns the Hong Kong Police Force will carry on organizing public education initiatives through the CyberDefender Metaverse platform  .

The statement that was released by the Hong Kong Police Force unveiled that the city has witnessed a significant rise in technology-related crimes with 663 reported cases in the first quarter of 2023  . The total loss came to be $570 million which represents a 75% increase compared to the same period in the year of 2022  .

Safeguarding the Metaverse: CyberDefender Launches Online Event

CyberDefender not only unveiled its groundbreaking platform but also organized an online event on the same day . The main purpose of the event was to delve into effective strategies for preventing crime within the metaverse space .

During the event the spotlight shone on Chief Inspector Ip Cheuk-yu from the CSTCB, who emphasized the importance of being vigilant in the metaverse . His message was clear and direct and it went “Let us remember that all crimes commonly witnessed in cyberspace such as investment fraud, unauthorized system access, theft and even sexual crimes. All of these can equally occur within the metaverse “.

As the metaverse continues to gain prominence CyberDefender takes a proactive stand by encouraging awareness and starting important discussions to protect users from potential threats . This event serves as a rallying call to stay alert, to be informed on the subject and create a secure digital environment in this exciting new frontier .
