Animoca Brands Co-Founder Yat Siu’s X Account Compromised in Cryptocurrency Fraud – Users Alerted

Understanding the Cyber Attack

In a recent cybersecurity breach, Yat Siu, the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, experienced the hacking of his X (formerly known as Twitter) profile. This incident has sent ripples through the global crypto community, as scammers exploited the compromised account to promote a fraudulent token, falsely linked to a purported new launch by Animoca Brands.

Background on Animoca Brands

Animoca Brands, known for its innovative contributions to the Web3 ecosystem, found itself at the center of this security breach. The company promptly warned users to avoid any interaction with the hacked profile and to refrain from purchasing tokens associated with the fraudulent account. The hackers misleadingly announced the launch of a new token named “ANIMOCA.” Following the deceptive promotional posts, the token’s value skyrocketed, increasing fivefold within minutes, only to plummet after the posts were taken down.

Security Breach and Response

Yat Siu, communicating through an alternative account, confirmed the breach and revealed that the attackers had bypassed the two-factor authentication (2FA) security measure. He promptly alerted X’s support team about the incident and expressed his willingness to report any other vulnerabilities detected within the X security framework.

In an official statement, Animoca Brands emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:

Unfortunately, @ysiu’s social media account has been compromised. There is no official token or NFT launch from Animoca Brands. The token launch on Solana as claimed in a post was made by the hacker. Please DO NOT engage with the account and stay vigilant.

It’s crucial to note that Animoca Brands has not initiated any official token or NFT launch. The alleged token launch on Solana was purely a fabrication by the impersonator. The company urged everyone to remain cautious and avoid any interactions with the compromised account.

Implications for Security on X

This incident raises significant concerns regarding the security measures in place on X, especially considering that Yat Siu had secured his account with 2FA. Users are strongly advised to verify the authenticity of any tokens or contracts from official announcements before engaging with them. In the unfortunate event of accounts being hacked or targeted by phishing attempts, it’s imperative to report such incidents directly to the respective platform without delay.
