Exploring the Metaverse Event Focuses on Crime Prevention Strategies

During the launch event titled “Exploring the Metaverse” discussions on crime prevention strategies in the metaverse took place across three virtual spaces .Chief Inspector Ip Cheuk-yu of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau highlighted the need for vigilance in the metaverse, stressing that all cybercrimes including investment fraud and theft, can occur in this digital realm.

Education Initiatives to Combat Rising Virtual Asset Crime

In response to a significant increase in virtual asset crime, the Hong Kong Police Force plans to enhance technology crime education programs , particularly targeting the younger generation .The first quarter of 2023 saw 663 reported cases related to virtual assets, resulting in a total loss of $570 million, which is a 75 percent rise compared to the same period in 2022 .

The police stated that CyberDefender will continue organizing public education initiatives on various topics through the Metaverse platform .These initiatives aim to raise awareness among young people about the latest developments in information technology, potential risks and the importance of preventing technology-related crimes .

This initiative aligns with China’s broader focus on metaverse research and development, as demonstrated by the launch of the China Metaverse Technology and Application Innovation Platform in Nanjing . Managed by Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), this innovation platform aims to advance metaverse-related endeavors throughout the country .
